ᝰ THE STORY
Niskala—the unseen, the formless, the realm beyond sight. A moment suspended between the tangible and the ethereal. A ritual shrouded in secrecy, where time itself seemed to fold into the thick, rising smoke.
A remote village, nestled between vast plains and the restless ocean, stood silent beneath the weight of an ancient tradition. The air was thick with the scent of burning incense, its curling tendrils dancing toward the heavens, weaving a bridge between the earthly and the divine. A group of Balinese men, clad in pristine white ceremonial sarong, moved in unison—silent, deliberate. Their krisses gleamed under the dim light, their foreheads adorned with grains of rice and frangipani blooms, marking their connection to the unseen forces at play.
The procession was almost dreamlike, the only sound breaking the silence was the haunting echo of the gamelan, its metallic resonance pulsing through the night like a heartbeat from another world. Held only once every decade, this was a sacred convergence—a ritual of remembrance, devotion, and transcendence, calling upon the spirits of the twins who once ruled this village.
At first, no photograph was permitted. This was a place of reverence, not spectacle. But as the ritual unfolded, as the men gathered around the ancient stone altar—its surface adorned with intricate carvings lost to time—a shift in the air granted passage. Smoke enveloped the scene, blurring the line between what was real and what belonged to the unseen.
It was in this fleeting moment that the portrait was captured. A gaze heavy with untold stories. Eyes reflecting the weight of generations. A presence neither fully here nor fully beyond. Niskala—the unseen forces that shape the seen, the whispers of ancestors carried in the wind, the thin veil between this world and the next.
As the last embers of incense faded, as the procession dissolved into the depths of the village, one truth remained—this was not a moment to be merely witnessed. It was a moment to be felt, to be remembered, to linger in the space where the known and the unknown meet.
A ritual of faith, of mystery, of timeless devotion. A moment never to be forgotten.
