ᝰ THE STORY
Irayani, a young Balinese dancer who is 15, was about to start her cultural performance when we met in Pejeng area, not far from Ubud.
Held in the main temple of the village, the performance on that evening was the ‘Janger dance’, one of Bali’s unique dances created in the 1930s. With gamelan batel or gender wayang instruments playing in the background, Janger is danced by ten pairs of young men and women. The group of women is called ‘janger’, while the men are called ‘kecak’. They would alternately dance together and sing the Janger song.
The first attribute that is always present and characterizes so well the appearance of the Janger dance performance is the gelungan, that object-ornament used on Irayani’s head. It is only used by females and the shape is different depending on the village it is being performed since each village has its own variation of dances. Yes, Balinese culture is so complex at times!
The second property is the cloth used here by Irayani to wrap her body. Although we cannot see it fully in the frame, she was wearing the famously noticeable kain prada. This cloth is chosen depending on the location of the village but remains of Balinese patterns. It usually shows the identity of the dancer and, to an extent, the group, since all dancers must wear the same for better harmony.
Other components that make the Janger dancer complete include the badong, that kind of thick decorative necklace, and the kipas, the fan used during some dance’s parts.
All of those components make it for a striking portrait, highlighting the vibrancy of the colorful Balinese culture while allowing the viewer to establish an intimate connection with the subject.
