ᝰ THE STORY
At the break of dawn, four women make their way to the fields, balancing woven bamboo baskets atop their headscarves as they walk in perfect rhythm along the narrow embankment of a flooded rice paddy. Behind them, Mount Guntur rises majestically, its silhouette softened by the morning mist.
The journey to this very spot began the day before. A promise made to return and witness the land bathed in first light. At 5 a.m., the alarm cut through the stillness, pulling the day into motion. With the camera in hand, the early hours unfolded in quiet solitude, pastel hues stretching across the sky as the sun made its gentle ascent. The scene was serene, almost untouched, with no soul in sight.
Just as the morning seemed to settle into stillness, distant figures emerged on the horizon. A group of field workers advanced steadily, their silhouettes growing sharper with each step. A pause. A moment of still anticipation. Then, as if placed by design, four women passed through the heart of the frame, their effortless movement blending seamlessly into the landscape. The camera was ready, the shutter clicked, and the moment was caught—pure, unposed, and entirely unexpected.
Curiosity led to a quiet pursuit, a desire to share the captured image. When the photograph was shown, laughter and surprise followed. These four women were not merely co-workers; they were sisters, born and raised in the same village, tending these fields together every day. A simple revelation, yet one that deepened the meaning of the encounter.
A small hut nestled among the rice paddies became the setting for an impromptu gathering. Over steaming cups of black coffee, conversation flowed, bridging worlds between observer and observed, traveler and local.
The Four Sisters is an invitation. An invitation to venture into the unknown, to follow where the path leads, and to remain open to the stories waiting to be uncovered just beyond the next bend.
