ᝰ THE STORY
Four women are about to start their day in the fields, carrying woven bamboo baskets on their headscarves while peacefully walking along a flooded rice paddy, with Mount Guntur in the background.
As I ventured into the wild areas of the western part of Java island, I aimed to take a few landscape photographs and, after surveying several locations, I promised myself to go back to this exact spot the next day on an early morning.
The alarm dragged me out of bed at 5 a.m., and I was up there, shooting at the same location from the day before. As the sun shyly started to show up on the horizon while revealing its pastel colors, the photographs could only look promising. It was quiet and rather empty. But as I started to return home, I could see many workers from afar who seemed to be walking in my direction. I paused, stood still, thought, and waited. Among them were four women who passed exactly right in the center of my frame. My camera was ready, and I caught this unexpected moment. None seemed to have paid attention to me, which conveyed a natural result to this photograph.
I then decided to follow along to show them the photographs I had just taken. It was to my greatest surprise that the women told me they were sisters all living in the same village and working together in those fields daily! What a surprise, and what a morning! We shared a hot black coffee in a small rice field hut and talked further before the start of their work.
The Four Sisters is a real invitation to discover and explore new places on our own while staying on the lookout for what may happen, for we never know who we can meet at the next corner and the story we can uncover.
