ᝰ THE STORY
Bali, often called "The Island of Gods", is also known as "The Island of a Thousand Temples". It is said that temples outnumber houses, with some estimates reaching as high as 50,000. While this may seem unbelievable at first, the sheer presence of temples scattered across the island quickly makes the claim feel entirely plausible.
Balinese temples, or pura, are not merely places of worship but living embodiments of the island’s unique blend of Hinduism, indigenous traditions, and spiritual devotion. Though they share common architectural features, no two are ever truly alike—especially in the northern regions, where an enchanting sense of architectural anarchy prevails.
One of the most enigmatic among them is Pura Ulun Danu Tamblingan, an ancient lakeside sanctuary shrouded in legend and mysticism. Renovated in recent decades, the temple has preserved its minimalist layout, distinguished by a single monumental Paduraksa gate. Unlike most Balinese temples, which feature two courtyards (Jaba and Dalam), this one stands apart—its towering entrance echoing the silhouette of a Candi Bentar (split gate), yet holding a presence uniquely its own.
Perhaps the most striking feature of Mystic Tamblingan is the presence of its meru—tiered, thatched-roof shrines, always arranged in odd numbers from three to eleven. These layered structures, reminiscent of pagodas found in China or Japan, symbolize a sacred link between the earthly and divine realms. The higher the number of tiers, the greater the temple’s spiritual significance. Through the open shaft beneath each meru, the gods are believed to descend, maintaining a celestial connection to the land.
The lake itself carries an air of mysticism, woven into local folklore. Its waters are said to possess divine healing properties, a belief rooted in a legend where Danau Tamblingan once cured a devastating plague that swept through nearby villages. The name itself reflects this sacred power: Tamba means ‘medicine,’ while Elingang translates to ‘spiritual ability’—a reminder of the lake’s revered status.
Captured in a rare moment of stillness, Mystic Tamblingan evokes a sense of timelessness. After heavy rainfall, an impenetrable mist enveloped the lake, muting the landscape in an eerie hush. Even the sun’s rays struggled to pierce through, casting only the faintest glow on the distant horizon. Deep greens, softened by moisture, merged with shifting shades of gray, accentuating the ethereal nature of the scene. An overwhelming presence lingered in the air—an energy that could be felt rather than seen. In this silent sanctuary, where earth, water, and spirit converge, the veil between worlds seemed almost tangible.
