ᝰ THE STORY
For several weeks, I searched for a particular view of Mount Agung. Rather than photographing Bali's sacred mountain from its more familiar southern and western perspectives, I wanted to find a way to approach it from the northeast of the island and place it within a much larger landscape.
The search lasted nearly eight weeks. I returned repeatedly to the coast and surrounding areas, exploring different positions, elevations, distances, and times of day, looking for a composition in which the mountain would not simply dominate the frame, but become part of a deeper relationship between the sea, the land, and the people who inhabit it.
This search was closely connected to the Balinese concept of kaja-kelod, one of the fundamental spatial orientations of Balinese Hindu life. Kaja refers to the direction of the mountains, while kelod refers to the direction of the sea. In this understanding of the island, the sacred mountain and the ocean occupy opposite ends of a symbolic axis. Mount Agung, Bali's highest and most revered volcano, stands at the heart of this spiritual geography.
In Litoranea II, I wanted to make that relationship visible.
The composition rises through a succession of natural and human layers. At the very bottom, the sea marks the kelod, the lowest and most distant horizon of this visual axis. Two traditional fishing boats, known as jukung, emerge from the waves, introducing a human presence into the landscape. Above them, the dense texture of the palm trees creates a distinctly tropical foreground, their overlapping forms giving depth and movement to the image.
Beyond the palms, the land gradually opens toward the volcano. Morning mist still lingers along the slopes of Mount Agung, partially veiling its contours as the mountain emerges from the atmosphere. It is neither completely distant nor fully revealed. The mountain appears to be slowly awakening above the landscape.
This layering was essential to the photograph. I was not looking simply for a beautiful view of Agung. I wanted to compress several dimensions of Bali into a single frame: the sea, human activity, tropical vegetation, the fertile land, and finally the sacred mountain that has shaped the island's spiritual and physical landscape for centuries.
The final image was captured from the air, but the photograph was born long before the drone was launched. It was the result of weeks spent observing the landscape, searching for the right conditions and waiting for the elements to align: the position of the mountain, the movement of the sea, the presence of the jukung, the texture of the palms, and the lingering morning mist.
The result has an almost painterly quality. Strong diagonals lead the eye through successive layers, from the waves and boats to the palms, the volcanic terrain, and finally Mount Agung itself. What initially appears to be a vast landscape becomes, on closer observation, a study of Bali's relationship between sea and mountain, humanity and nature, the earthly and the sacred.
Litoranea II is therefore not simply a photograph of Mount Agung. It is an attempt to make visible the axis around which much of Balinese life has been oriented for generations.
